The Four Most Common Hair Care Concerns

Who would have thought that proper hair care can eliminate the bad hair day? Well, it can’t fix a bad style choice, but good hair doesn’t just happen by accident. Caring for your hair is just as important as good skin care.

You know all those commercials you see on TV which claim to reverse and fix dry hair? Well, those are basically the same as commercials for lotion which claim to cure dry skin. Hair care remedies are temporary… there is no easy fix for hair that has already become dry, brittle and porous. The best cure is to prevent it from happening, so hair care routines are very important! Think of hair care as an anti aging defense – your hair ages quicker than you do, and needs more care.

Shine

Shiny hair has always been equated with healthy hair, even though the health of a hair follicle cannot be determined due to its location deep within the scalp. The shine is due to light reflected by the smooth surface of the individual hair shafts. Conditioners containing polymer film-forming agents are important for good hair care and can increase hair shine by helping the cuticle lie flat against the hair shaft for a smoother appearance.

Conditioners are the best way to improve the look of damaged or weathered hair. They are not reconstructive hair care, but they do offer shine and decrease static electricity. If they contain UV protection, than it can help in the long run by protecting the head of the hair. (You should also be using UV protecting make-up, but that’s another issue altogether).

Static Electricity

Combing or brushing the hair causes static electricity and prevents the hair from lying smoothly in a given style. Fine hair is more susceptible to static electricity than coarse hair. Good hair care conditioners will prevent static electricity, and will make it easier to style your hair, thus you should consider a quality conditioner a vital part of your hair care routine.

Strength

Increasing the strength of your hair can be achieved by using conditioners with ingredients such as hydrolyzed proteins, or hydrolyzed human hair keratin proteins. They can easily penetrate the hair shaft to replenish the hairs nutrients, providing a high degree of improvement in strength.

These proteins can also be used to smooth down split ends. Split ends develop after the protective cuticle has been stripped away from the end of hair fibers as a result of chemicals or vigorous brushing. Part of your hair care routine should involve a trim every four weeks, which will prevent split ends.

UV Protection

While the hair is made up of nonliving materials and cannot develop cancerous qualities, its cosmetic value can be diminished through excessive exposure to the sun. UV exposure can induce oxidation of the sulfur molecules within the hair shaft, which are important for hair strength. If this oxidation occurs, the hair can become weak, dry, rough, faded and brittle. So, you need to incorporate UV protection into your hair care routine. Look for UV protectant products is one way, but there are also easier methods – like wearing a hat!
