Herbal Bath Teas – Healing Throughout Time

Since the beginning of human existence, herbs and plants have been used to sustain and heal life; a matter of fact herbal bath teas constitute some of the oldest medicinal remedies known. Healing formulas were developed based on various plants and many are still used today in skin care treatments (such as green tea).

Ancient Traditions Revealed

Archeologist have uncovered evidence that herbs were used 60,000 years ago in Neanderthal burial grounds. Additional discoveries were made indicating these early people used herbs as a form of medicine. This should be no surprise since the Babylonian records indicate they used herbal bath teas 5,000 years ago. The source of much Tibetan medicine today remains rooted in herbal remedies.

History of Medicine

Hippocrates, who is known as the father of medicine and is the namesake for the Hippocratic Oath, was the first to recognize the link between diet and health. This included many herbal teas, which the Greeks would not only use for drinking, but for bathing as well.

From Ancient Days to Our Days

In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries the scientific revolution brought about many new discoveries. Later in the twentieth century, building upon the previous knowledge, pharmaceuticals came into existence. In fact, many pharmaceutical ingredients are found in herbs. Of course, nobody is going to suggest you take a soothing Motrin bath, but the notion of enjoying herbal bath teas should not seem strange.

Somewhere in between the emergence of primitive medicine and modern medicine, health care professionals have understood the importance of both discoveries. Recently, scientific research and evidence has proven that many of these "ancient remedies" actually work. Now, the pharmaceutical companies are jumping on the bandwagon, coming out with their own line of products and are even searching for new botanical drugs. As a result, we have something emerging called "Nutraceuticals".

How to Effectively Use Herbal Bath Teas

There is provocative evidence which suggest herbal bath teas may be extremely beneficial outside of the soothing smell. These teas have very few stimulants, and act as balancers in the water, which is actually more relaxing to the body than stimulants are (t is also suspected to be an excellent treatment for acne, and oily skin care). These baths should only be taken in the evening hours, and are especially beneficial to relaxation or meditation sessions.  Herbal bath teas should not be used in conjunction with other stimulants – drink only water before, during and after.

Of course, before using any bath and body products you should always consult with your physician – especially if you are pregnant or nursing, or have serious allergies. Individuals who are extremely sensitive to scent should also be cautious.
