Beneficial Effects of Bath Salts

For thousands of years, humans have used bath salts in various forms to heal and cure various ailments. At some points in time, salt was actually worth more than gold itself! Today, the health benefits of bath salts have been proven, and are subscribed by medical professionals for psoriasis and other skin conditions.

Dead Sea Salts – Better for a Reason

There is a lot of hype surrounding dead sea salts, and it exists for a reason. Water in the Dead Sea contains 27% of the salts known to man, whereas a regular ocean (such as the Pacific) contains 3%. These dead sea salts consist of magnesium, potassium, bromide, calcium chlorides and sodium, while regular sea salt is mainly just sodium (about 80%).

These extra minerals are perfect for bath salts. Magnesium combats fluid retention (also good to use on sprains and strains), and stress (it sooths the nerves). This is one of the reasons Dead Sea salts are said to relieve pain. Bromides are a natural muscle relaxant, and sodium is crucial for lymphatic fluid balancing. Calcium enables mineral replenishment in your skin, and is crucial to keeping your skin balanced. Potassium energizes your body, and is an enabler – you skin will be able to absorb more nutrients when exposed to potassium. This is why Dead Sea bath salts are the premium salts on the market.

How to Use Bath Salts

For some reason, in all the hype surrounding bath and body products, bath salts have been largely ignored. This is really sad, considering they may be the most beneficial of all natural skin care products! You can find Dead Sea salts at most bath and body shops.

First, draw a bath which is about 37 – 40 degrees celcius (warm, but not too hot). Add 32 ounces of Dead Sea salt, and let it dissolve for about 5 minutes. You can also squeeze in a grapefruit (for cleansing purposes), or add a few drops of lavender (for aromatherapy purposes). Stay in the water, soaking and relaxing, for about 15 minutes. When drying, be sure to pat your skin – don’t rub. Make sure you drink plenty of water before, during and after the soak!

Salt Scrubs

Some bath salts are rather large, and are meant solely for dissolving. However, courts salt powder makes for a natural exfoliate, which can be used on occasion. Again, Dead Sea salt is recommended, and application is simple – just wash with the salt as if it were soap! Be careful not to press too hard, and do not do this too often. If you see red skin, then you know you have pressed too hard.

Treating Aliments

Dermatologists regularly bath salts for many types of acne, psoriasis, eczema, and other skin aliments. It is not recommended for lupus. Of course, you should always consult with a dermatologist before using any bath salts as a remedy, as they will be able to provide correct guidance.

Salts also reduce swelling, and used with cool water can be very relieving for sprains (the most commonly used salt for this is Epson salt).
